OCD Group Treatment
OVERVIEW:
Treatment starts with a few individual sessions with the therapist to assess and plan. The client can then participate in small group telehealth sessions to implement strategies planned in individual sessions. Each group participant is asked to commit to three weeks of group at a time. Treatment focuses mostly on Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) along with some basic anxiety management strategies.
This group-based treatment is meant to complement individual therapy with another therapist - whether or not that therapist is an OCD specialist. Treatment can start while looking for another individual therapist.
Part 1 - Assessment & Planning - Individual Sessions
- After a free phone consultation, 2-4 individual sessions (less sessions for those who have already done ERP)
- Both general and OCD assessments
- Rationale and how to's for treatment strategies, including ERP
- ERP Planning
Part 2 - ERP Implementation - Weekly Telehealth Group Sessions
- Group size: 3-6 participants (kept small enough to allow checking in with each participant every week)
- At least two group time options to choose from - 75 min. groups on a weekday late morning & a weekday evening. Offered ongoing throughout the year.
- Sign up for 3 weeks at a time - join at start of each 3 week period. Option to continue as long as client is still benefitting from participation. It's anticipated that the vast majority of participants will improve significantly after 3-6 months and would no longer need this group treatment.
- In each 3-week period, each client will work on implementing one specific ERP. If already working individually with an OCD specialist, care will be coordinated. Those new to ERP may want to use their first 3-weeks of group to learn and observe before diving into their own ERP.
- Topics: ERP successes and challenges, peer encouragement and ideas, brief therapist teachable moments
Other Details:
- Participants need a private space for telehealth sessions and to use either a computer or tablet to be able see slides used by therapist and to see group members.
- Written work will need to be done on the computer. Instructions will be given but basic computer skills are recommended.
